Oman's new labour law, issued under Royal Decree No. 53/2023, sets a clear ceiling on ordinary working time: employers may not require more than eight hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. The rules are framed to protect health and well-being while keeping workplaces organised and efficient.

Daily hours, weekly cap and breaks

Article 70 of the decree is the core of the Oman new labour law on time at work. Alongside the eight-hour day and 40-hour week, employees are entitled to a one-hour break during the day for rest and meals. No one may be kept working for more than six consecutive hours without a break.

Those limits matter for anyone comparing a contract with actual practice. A full ordinary week under the cap is five eight-hour days; any longer pattern would need to fit inside the same weekly total and the break rules.

Ramadan hours and posted schedules

Special rules apply in the holy month of Ramadan. Muslim employees are entitled to reduced hours, capped at six hours a day or 30 hours a week.

The law also pushes for transparency on the shop floor. Employers must display working hours and weekly rest days in a clearly visible place so staff know the roster and authorities can check compliance.

How workplace disputes are meant to be handled

Oman's new labour law also sets a stepped path for worker–employer disputes. Establishments with 50 or more workers must keep a formal, approved internal complaints system under Article 8. Staff may complain directly or through a representative so issues can be settled inside the organisation first.

If that fails, Article 9 says a labour case cannot go straight to court until it has been referred to the relevant ministry department for amicable settlement. That authority is to try reconciliation within a maximum of 30 days before the matter proceeds further.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Oman ke naye labour law ke mutabiq aam din mein kaam zyada se zyada 8 ghante, hafte mein 40 ghante ho sakta hai. Beech mein ek ghante ka break bhi milna chahiye, aur lagataar 6 ghante se zyada bina break ke duty nahi. Ramadan mein Muslim mulazimeen ke liye had 6 ghante rozana ya 30 ghante hafta hai. Jo log Oman mein kaam karte hain, unhein apni duty timing aur weekly off workplace par likhi hui dekhni chahiye.
