Apple AI features in iOS 27.2 update add SynthID marks

Apple AI features in the iOS 27.2 update now place an invisible SynthID watermark on images created with Image Playground, so pictures made by Apple's generative tools can be identified later. Apple first signalled the move in June when it introduced the new Image Playground; the marking has now landed with this software release.

What gets the watermark

Every newly generated Image Playground image receives SynthID. When Apple's AI edits an existing photo, marking depends on how much the picture changes. Reports from Photos app testing say Extend and Reframe edits carried the watermark. Clean Up was mixed: light retouches, such as removing a speck of lint, stayed unmarked, while larger alterations were tagged. That split reflects a simple idea—small tidying does not turn a real photo into an AI image.

How SynthID works and how to check it

Unlike labels stored in file metadata, which can vanish when someone shares a picture or takes a screenshot, SynthID is embedded in the pixels themselves. Google says the AI image watermarking does not harm quality and can survive cropping, filters and compression. You cannot verify the mark on an iPhone: there is no built-in detector. Checking requires Google's SynthID Detector, which became available to everyone in early October. The detector only confirms images that were marked; it does not prove whether unmarked pictures were made with other AI tools.

Why Apple is using Google's system

The striking detail is that Apple is adopting a competitor's technology instead of shipping its own watermark. A shared scheme is more useful if many firms use it and people can check marks in one place. Apple's move pushes SynthID closer to a common industry practice, even while coverage remains limited to content that has been stamped.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • June: Apple announced SynthID marking alongside the new Image Playground.
  • Early October: Google opened SynthID Detector to the public.
  • iOS 27.2 release: Image Playground creations on the iPhone began receiving the invisible watermark.

Aasan alfaaz mein

iOS 27.2 ke sath Image Playground se bani tasveeron par chupa hua SynthID nishan lagta hai. Nayi AI images hamesha mark hoti hain; chhoti Clean Up edits aksar nahi. iPhone khud yeh nishan nahi dikhata—Google ka SynthID Detector chahiye. Is se WhatsApp ya social media par AI tasveer pehchanna asaan ho sakta hai.

It is a hidden signal placed in an image—here, SynthID in the pixels—so tools can later show the picture was produced or heavily altered by AI, without relying on metadata that sharing can strip away.
