Asian markets leaned clearly higher on Tuesday, as Anthropic’s US initial public offering filing and a large Meta fundraising plan lifted appetite for risk ahead of major tech earnings and central bank meetings.
South Korea’s tech-heavy KOSPI rose more than 4% in early trade. Japan’s Nikkei was 1.9% higher, and MSCI’s broadest gauge of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan advanced 1.2%. Nasdaq futures were up 0.4% after US chip stocks climbed 2.8% overnight, their biggest one-day gain in a month. European stock futures were down 0.23%.
Anthropic filing and Meta’s $95bn raise
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI system, filed for a US IPO and disclosed a steep loss alongside very strong revenue growth. Investors are weighing how much return the industry may see from heavy AI spending, and whether profits can keep pace.
Sentiment also got a lift from Meta Platforms’ plan to raise up to $95 billion in what would be its largest-ever equity fundraising. Together, the Anthropic IPO news and Meta’s move fed a broader AI market rally tone across Asia’s morning session.
More than a third of S&P 500 firms are due to report results this week, including Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon. Anthony Saglimbene, Ameriprise’s chief market strategist, said investors will want proof that AI demand is widening beyond closely linked industry deals, so that heavy infrastructure spending still looks justified. He also said markets need confidence that aggressive capital spending reflects lasting business needs and that profitability can hold as new capacity comes online.
Rates, oil and what markets watch next
Currency markets were quiet ahead of policy decisions from the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan. Economists expect all three to leave interest rates unchanged for now, so attention turns to what policymakers say about the path ahead.
Fed officials have signalled they will not raise short-term borrowing costs again this week. Inflation worries remain prominent, and traders are pricing in a Fed hike in December. The US 10-year Treasury yield was steady at 4.992%, staying under 5% after it breached that level in September during market stress over AI concerns.
The yen, often treated as a haven, was last at 157.72 per dollar ahead of the Bank of Japan’s decision on Friday. That bank is widely expected to stress that Japan has met its 2% inflation goal after nearly 14 years and that prices could run hotter, which markets read as a possible rate hike as soon as December.
Brent crude futures eased 0.7% to $114.95 a barrel, moving off a six-month high as investors weighed the chance of a resolution in the nearly eight-month-old US-Israeli war with Iran. Nick Twidale of ATFX Global said supply remains the main worry, and any threat to physical exports could push Brent back toward recent highs and possibly $120. Gold eased slightly to $4,013.70 an ounce.
Geng Ngarmboonanant of J.P. Morgan Asset Management said the firm expects US growth to hold up even if rates stay higher.
Tuesday’s tape showed broad gains led by Korea and Japan, while the AI stocks rally overnight in US chips helped set the tone.
