Meta has signalled another Meta business terms delay, saying enforcement of its updated ads and business rules may slip past 20 November while it consults publishers worried about artificial intelligence (AI) training—systems that learn from large amounts of online text and images.
In a post on X, Meta communications head Andy Stone said the company does “not plan to make policy changes without a full consultation with industry groups and leaders.” He added that Meta had heard publishers’ feedback on the proposed ads and business terms update, that it was “committed to getting this right,” and that if consultation ran past 20 November, “we’d delay implementation of the updated terms.” Until then, he said, “our existing terms remain in place.”
What the new terms set out to change
The Meta new business terms were first meant to take effect on 30 October. Early wording appeared to give Meta permission to train its AI models on news sites that use Facebook and Instagram. Meta later revised the text to drop language saying it could “train” its products on content taken from those sites. Legal experts have still said the rewrite may not fully close off that possibility, which helped fuel publisher concern.
Meta then postponed the start date to 20 November. Stone’s latest comments mean a further Meta business terms delay—possibly without a fixed new date—is now on the table while talks continue.
Who has pushed back
Alongside criticism from the News/Media Alliance, US lawmakers from both major parties have spoken against the update. Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said the revised terms show Meta is “attempting to exploit American creators and businesses.” Senator Adam Schiff of California urged Meta to reverse the change.
Stone’s public line stresses consultation before any Meta business terms implementation, framing the pause as a response to that industry and political pressure rather than a final rewrite of the rules.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- 30 October 2026 (planned): Updated business terms were originally due to take effect.
- After the first draft drew AI-training objections: Meta altered wording that had referred to “train”ing products on scraped site content, then set a new start date of 20 November.
- By 20 November plan: Meta had already delayed once in response to publisher concerns.
- 28 October 2026: Stone said consultation may run beyond 20 November, in which case Meta would delay the updated terms again and keep existing terms in force.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Meta ne Facebook aur Instagram ke naye business qawaneen dobara late karne ka ishara diya hai. Publishers ko ghabrahat thi ke unki khabrein AI sikhane ke liye use ho sakti hain. Ab purane qawaneen lagi rahenge jab tak mashwara mukammal na ho. Agar aap content Facebook ya Instagram par share karte hain, to abhi foran koi naya rule nahi chal raha.
