Microsoft's OpenAI revenue share reached $10 billion in the quarter ended 30 September, the company said in a regulatory filing. The figure covers commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments, and equalled nearly 11% of Microsoft's $92.3 billion in total quarterly revenue.

Microsoft's financial year begins in July, so the three months to 30 September 2026 were the first quarter of its fiscal 2027. For the full 2026 fiscal year, revenue linked to OpenAI totalled $24.1 billion. At the latest quarterly pace, Microsoft would collect about $40 billion a year from OpenAI-related arrangements.

How large the financial tie remains

The $10 billion underscores how tightly the companies' money flows are still bound even as they compete more often for the same customers. Microsoft also reported $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June. Those receivables are amounts OpenAI still owes on earlier transactions, not extra revenue booked in the quarter.

It is not clear how much of Microsoft's OpenAI revenue share came from revenue-sharing payments versus Azure cloud services. Leaked documents previously pointed to $865.8 million in net revenue-sharing payments from OpenAI to Microsoft in the first nine months of 2025. OpenAI is reported to share 20% of its revenue with Microsoft under an older arrangement tied to Microsoft's investment of more than $13 billion; neither company has publicly confirmed that percentage.

Deal terms through 2030

Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI must keep sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap, while also being free to use rival cloud providers. The once-exclusive partnership began to loosen in October 2025, when Microsoft eased its hold so OpenAI could work with other clouds. In return, OpenAI committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services under that October 2025 pact.

Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI slipped slightly from about 25% in June to 24% in September, continuing a gradual fall from roughly 27% after the October 2025 recapitalisation. Microsoft did not say what caused the dilution.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • April 2026: OpenAI agreed to keep sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap, while using other cloud providers.
  • June–September 2026: Microsoft's stake moved from about 25% to 24%; OpenAI-related receivables rose from $6 billion to $7.2 billion.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Microsoft ne OpenAI ke saath deals se ek quarter mein $10 billion kamaye hain. Yeh Microsoft ki us quarter ki kul sales ka lagbhag 11 percent hai. Dono companies ka paisa ab bhi milta rahega, kam az kam 2030 tak. Pakistan mein jo log ChatGPT jaisi AI tools ya Azure cloud use karte hain, unke liye yeh dikhata hai ke yeh partnership ab bhi bohot bari aur mehngi hai.
