ISLAMABAD — Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has proposed a JUI-F new charter of democracy, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other opposition leaders have signalled support after an opposition alliance meeting in parliament.
The sitting ended without a final go-ahead on the text. Participants said a decision would come only after more consultations. During the meeting, a telephone call was also placed to Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
What the opposition meeting decided
Opposition leaders stressed that Pakistan’s national crisis needs every political party at the same table, and that work on the new charter should move ahead. They also agreed to convene an All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC)—an all-parties political gathering—in the second week of November, where the alliance intends to announce the charter formally.
PTI said it would brief its members of parliament on the proposal. After the session with the JUI-F chief, PTI MNAs (members of the National Assembly) held a separate meeting to consider Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s plan.
PTI backing and how the text will be shaped
PTI leader Asad Qaiser said his party has agreed to the proposal presented by Maulana Fazlur Rehman. He argued that the government has failed on the economic, administrative, and governance fronts, and said the party is considering calling an All Parties Conference (APC)—a meeting of major parties—on 9 or 10 November.
Barrister Ali Zafar said the terms of JUI-F’s new charter of democracy would be finalised through mutual consultation. He stressed that the opposition would try to take every stakeholder along, and that talks on Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s proposal are still under way.
The sequence leaves the public waiting on the written clauses: support has been signalled, but the detailed charter has not yet been locked in.
