Auto parts duty in Pakistan is going up for 13 imported automobile parts and components that are now made locally. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), the federal body that approves major economic decisions, has cleared an additional 11% customs duty on them. Customs duty is a tax on goods brought into the country, so the extra charge is expected to make these imports dearer compared with local alternatives. The government says the aim is to protect domestic manufacturers and encourage local production.
What the decision covers
The proposal for this auto parts duty in Pakistan came from the Revenue Division and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the agency that collects federal taxes. The decision widens the scope of SRO 693(I)/2006, a government notification (SRO stands for statutory regulatory order) that already adds duties on imported auto parts where locally made substitutes exist. The newly covered items are reported to include heavy commercial vehicle tyres, number plates, reflectors and brackets, footrests, wheel assemblies, windscreens, seat bases, tail boxes, and various covers, plates and decorative parts.
The Revenue Division said more than 1,200 Pakistan Customs Tariff codes for auto parts and components already fall under the existing notification. Duty rates under it differ depending on how far each part is localised. The Engineering Development Board and the Ministry of Industries and Production have been recommending further additions as domestic manufacturing grows.
What it could mean for buyers and local makers
The measure is designed to make imported components less competitive and give local suppliers more tariff protection. The flip side is that vehicle assemblers and buyers who rely on imported parts could face higher costs. Whether those costs reach car owners depends on how much locally made parts are available, and at what price and quality.
The approval does not necessarily mean vehicle prices will rise straight away, and the sources do not say when the new duty takes effect. For arithmetic only, an 11% rate means every Rs100 of imported value on a covered item would carry an extra Rs11 in duty.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Pakistan ne 13 imported gaari ke parts par 11 percent extra customs duty manzoor ki hai, jo ab local taur par bante hain. Is ka maqsad local makers ko tahaffuz dena hai. Abhi yeh zaroori nahi ke gaari ki qeemat foran barh jaye, lekin imported parts mehnge ho sakte hain. Asal asar local parts ki dastyabi aur qeemat par depend karega.
