KPT clears two bulk carriers with 101,000-tonne load

Federal minister says Karachi Port wheat and DAP fertiliser arrived together on two foreign bulk carriers, with discharge under way at the multipurpose gateway terminal.

Karachi Port wheat and fertiliser imports moved ahead on Sunday as the Karachi Port Trust worked two overseas bulk carriers at once, Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said. Together the ships held 101,000 tonnes — 51,000 tonnes of grain and 50,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP), a farm nutrient used to raise crop yields.

Ships, berths and discharge progress

Both vessels tied up at the multipurpose gateway terminal. MV ZHONG CHANG 538 occupied Berth 10/11 with the DAP load. Port figures showed 48,525 tonnes already removed, leaving unloading nearly finished after crews shifted 5,481 tonnes over the previous day. MV GOKOVA M lay at Berth 16/17 with the wheat; more than 7,200 tonnes had come ashore and work was still under way.

The dual call involved KPT bulk carriers treated as priority traffic. Mr Chaudhry credited engineers, pilots, the terminal team, dock labour and hauliers for keeping discharge flowing without a stoppage.

Why the ministry flagged the operation

He argued that prompt clearance of farm inputs and food staples helps growers and underpins national food supplies. Working the pair of ships together, he said, showed stronger berth use and better throughput in KPT cargo handling. The ministry, he added, is pushing changes aimed at shorter stays in port, tighter management and firmer maritime facilities so essential goods keep moving.

Smooth harbour work and simpler logistics, he stressed, matter for getting critical cargo inland on time and for sturdier supply lines. Karachi Port wheat arriving in volume alongside fertiliser is part of that wider push to keep staple and farm supplies flowing through the harbour.

What port leadership said next

Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, who chairs KPT, said the harbour remains central to Pakistan’s trade links, especially for farm chemicals and staple foods. The ships received priority slots under instructions from the government. He linked ongoing upgrades, sharper day-to-day operations and wider handling capacity to broader trade and economic goals.

Officials framed the episode as evidence that the port can process large agricultural consignments in parallel when berths and labour are lined up. No retail price effect was announced with the statement; the focus stayed on discharge rates, berth use and continuity of essential imports.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Karachi Port par do bari jahazon se gandum aur DAP fertilizer utara ja raha hai. Dono mil kar lagbhag ek lakh ek hazar ton saman laaye hain. Wazir ka kehna hai ke yeh asal maal waqt par utarna kheti aur khane ke saman ke liye zaroori hai. Aam logon ke liye seedha matlab yeh hai ke bandargah zaroori imports rokne ke bajaye jaldi clear kar rahi hai.

In this case it means berthing bulk carriers and discharging their loads — here DAP fertiliser and wheat — at designated berths, with measured daily unload rates until the ships are cleared.
