The wheat support price in Pakistan for 2026 has been proposed at Rs 4,500 per maund after the prime minister, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and the chief ministers of the other provinces agreed on the figure for the upcoming season, Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said in Sargodha on Sunday.

Kirmani shared the proposal while chairing a review of wheat cultivation targets for Sargodha Division. A spokesperson said the meeting focused on planting plans for the Rabi season and on support measures meant to help growers sow and harvest on time.

Proposed rate and Sargodha planting target

According to the minister, the Rs 4,500-per-maund figure is a joint proposal from the federal and provincial leadership, presented as the wheat support price in Pakistan for the season ahead. Officials also fixed a cultivation target of 1.725 million acres for Sargodha Division and assigned field teams to push planting beyond that mark where possible.

Commissioner Sargodha Division Hafiz Shaukat Ali said wheat sowing would also be pursued on land covered by the Apna Khet Apna Rozgar, Ghori Pal, and Numbardar Grant programmes, widening the acreage expected to come under crop.

Rabi finance, fertiliser and seed support

To ease costs for farmers in the Rabi season, the government has opened several funding lines through the Kisan Card, a farmer credit facility. Interest-free loans of Rs 150 billion have been arranged for the season. An extra Rs 17 billion in interest-free funding has been set aside for DAP fertiliser—an important phosphate nutrient—bought via the Kisan Card at Rs 3,500 per acre.

Seed support includes a Rs 320 million subsidy on Punjab Seed Corporation (PSC) certified seed. After an Rs 800-per-bag discount, the bag price falls to Rs 7,000. Kirmani directed PSC to sell seed only at its official sales points and said advisory help would continue from sowing through harvest.

Water, sugar crushing and supply checks

On the chief minister’s instructions, authorities are taking action against canal water theft, Kirmani said. Talks are also under way with the Sugar Mills Association to start the crushing season earlier. Secretary Agriculture Punjab Shakeel Ahmed Mian said enough seed and fertiliser are available and restated a zero-tolerance stance on adulterated pesticide and fertiliser.

The Sargodha meeting was attended by MPAs Sultan Ali Ranjha and Mian Ikram-ul-Haq, former MNA Mohsin Shah Nawaz Ranjha, Secretary Agriculture Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Commissioner Hafiz Shaukat Ali, and other senior officials.
