Officials push early HPV shots for adolescent girls

In Islamabad on 1 November, health authorities asked families to arrange Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation for daughters between 9 and 14 years old. They framed the jab as a proven way to lower the chance of cervical cancer later in life, and said giving it before a girl meets the virus gives the best shield.

They also pressed for clearer community messaging so myths do not block uptake, arguing that early coverage can spare the next generation a disease that can prove fatal if left unchecked.

How the national programme works

Pakistan’s Federal Directorate for Immunization (FDI) is running a countrywide HPV effort with Gavi (the Vaccine Alliance), UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim is to shield teenage girls from infections linked to cervical cancer.

Eligible adolescents can receive the dose without paying at listed clinics, in schools, and through outreach or mobile teams meant to reach those far from fixed facilities.

Safety message and wider prevention

Authorities say the product has been studied at length and is needed to block HPV strains that may lead to cervical cancer years later. They cast uptake as a long-term gain for women’s health and a way to ease the country’s future disease load.

Vaccination alone is not the full plan: they also pointed to routine screening, prompt medical advice and public education as twin pillars of prevention, noting that shots and checks reinforce each other.

What parents are asked to do

Caregivers should verify facts with clinicians and enrol eligible girls in the free national scheme. Officials said sound family choices, local buy-in and easy access to preventive care are central to cutting cervical cancer among young women in Pakistan.
