Britain's Chevening scheme and Allied Bank Limited have launched a joint UK Pakistan scholarship path that pays full costs for Pakistani students to complete a master's at leading universities in Britain.

According to a British High Commission statement, the Chevening-ABL arrangement will back two Pakistani candidates each year across three academic years, with the first intake in the 2027-28 session. Priority areas include economics and financial inclusion alongside artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, technology and digital transformation.

How the first cohorts will be chosen

Selectors will draw the opening pair from people already in the Chevening applicant pool for 2027-28. A later round aimed at 2028-29 entrants is expected to open with the wider Chevening window in August 2027, so those winners would enrol in Britain during 2028.

Chevening is the UK government's international scholarship vehicle, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)—Britain's foreign-aid and diplomacy department—and by partner organisations. Since 1983 it has sent scholars for one-year master's programmes in the UK, normally covering fees, living support and travel. Almost 60,000 people from over 160 countries and territories have studied through the route.

What officials said

Jane Marriott, Britain's high commissioner in Pakistan, called the country's people its "greatest strength" and said she hoped the alliance would "help impressive future leaders to study at world-leading UK universities and bring fresh ideas home." She noted it was "especially fitting that a former Chevening scholar is now opening the same door for the next generation."

That reference was to ABL President and CEO Aizid Gill, who completed an MSc in Business Economics at the University of Manchester as a Chevening scholar in 2001 and is among Pakistan's nearly 2,000 Chevening alumni. Gill said the partnership is about giving talented Pakistanis the chance "to learn, grow and bring that exposure back home," and that Allied Bank wants to help the next generation of leaders gain skills that can serve the country's future.

Pakistani Chevening alumni already work across education, governance, health, climate, business and civil society, reinforcing people-to-people ties with the UK. This bank-backed track sits inside that wider UK masters scholarships for Pakistani students ecosystem rather than replacing the main Chevening competition.
