Asim Munir's Tehran visit is expected to focus on regional developments. Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Monday that Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, will travel to the Iranian capital to meet and consult officials there. The report's timing is not fully consistent, with one line describing the trip as happening today and another giving Tuesday as the day. Pakistan has not confirmed the visit, so there is no official word yet on when it will happen.
Talks come amid a stalled conflict
Iran and the United States have been locked in conflict since February. An interim peace deal, brokered by Pakistan, was reached in June but collapsed weeks later in July. Hostilities in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route linking the Gulf to the open ocean, have not stopped, and talks remain stalled.
Pakistan's senior leadership has been in regular contact with Tehran. Munir, along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, has exchanged messages with Iran's leadership in the hope of brokering lasting peace in the region. According to Tasnim, the agenda covers bilateral cooperation between Islamabad and Tehran, wider regional developments, and Pakistan's role as a mediator between Iran and the US. For background on the trip's timing, see our earlier report on the visit.
Saudi Arabia and the Houthi attacks
The trip comes as Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen intensify missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia. According to the reporting, the attacks this month have hit Saudi energy and aviation facilities, and one strike on Riyadh airport killed 12 people and wounded more than 300. Fighting has also grown since the government of Yemen, which is internationally recognised, launched Operation Dawn of Yemen on October 5 to recapture Houthi-held territory. The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen is providing air support for the offensive.
Pakistan signed a bilateral defence pact with Saudi Arabia in September 2025 and has also joined the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement with Turkiye and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan has vowed to defend the Kingdom if the attacks continue. Any Pakistani role in the Iran talks is therefore being watched alongside its commitments to Riyadh.
