Investment drive in Shanghai

Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah has announced the signing of 16 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Chinese firms during the Sindh Investment Conference held in Shanghai. The event, organized by the provincial government, drew approximately 400 representatives from over 100 international companies.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister emphasized that the conference aims to open new avenues for Chinese investment in the province. He assured potential investors that the Sindh government would provide a "one-window" facility to streamline business processes and ensure the full protection of their assets and personnel.

Focus on energy and technology

The provincial leadership highlighted several key sectors for collaboration, including Thar coal, electric vehicles (EVs), and the establishment of EV charging infrastructure. Murad Ali Shah noted that Sindh possesses a wind corridor capable of generating over 50,000 megawatts of electricity, alongside significant deposits of coal and granite in the Thar region.

Beyond government-to-government agreements, several private sector business concerns also signed deals during the moot. The Chief Minister expressed his vision for Karachi to mirror the industrial and economic progress seen in Shanghai, noting that Sindh currently contributes more than 27 percent to Pakistan's national economy.

Special Economic Zones and CPEC

A central feature of the investment pitch was the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone (DSEZ), a project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The DSEZ spans over 1,530 acres and offers significant incentives, including a 10-year income tax exemption and duty-free import of machinery.

The Chief Minister stated that the second phase of CPEC is shifting focus toward industry, agriculture, minerals, and technology. By inviting investment in wind, solar, and digital development, the provincial government aims to modernize its industrial base and enhance its contribution to the national exchequer.
