Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has said that governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will constitutionally end after six months and that the provincial government will then be restored. He stated that governor's rule and an emergency are currently in place across the province.
Speaking in a televised interview, the minister said governor's rule cannot be extended beyond the six-month constitutional limit. After that period, he said, the provincial assembly would resume. The emergency, however, would stay in force until terrorism was eliminated.
Emergency to continue beyond assembly's return
Chaudhry drew a clear line between the two measures. The time-bound end of governor's rule, in his account, does not automatically lift the emergency. He framed the emergency as a security response that would last as long as the fight against terrorism required.
That distinction matters for how power and day-to-day administration may shift once the six months are over. Under his description, elected provincial structures would return, while emergency powers linked to the security situation would remain.
Call for an all-parties conference
The minister urged the opposition to convene an all-parties conference (APC)—a meeting of political parties—against the imposition of the emergency and to invite the government to set out its position. He said political leaders should cooperate on issues where there was no disagreement.
He added that the government had not yet been contacted about such a conference. "If invited, I will personally explain the reasons for imposing an emergency and governor's rule," he said. The government, he said, remained ready to settle outstanding issues with the opposition through dialogue.
Talks with PTI described as ongoing
Chaudhry alleged that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders discussed negotiations in the media but avoided clear answers when invited for talks. He also claimed that no single PTI leader commanded the consensus of the whole party.
Asked about contacts with opposition figures, he said details could not be disclosed publicly. He confirmed that talks with PTI were taking place, with some points already shared with the media and others kept confidential. He said PTI should continue cooperating with the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
