The Capital Development Authority (CDA), which runs civic works in the federal capital, said on Wednesday that Shahdara Dam building should get under way shortly. Planners put the possible boost at about 5–10 million gallons daily — MGD means million gallons each day — for Islamabad’s network, but only after design work and technical checks are finished.
How much water and when
A CDA spokesperson described a build timeline of roughly two years. The goal is to enlarge the capital’s surface-water stock while demand from homes and businesses keeps climbing. The dam would feed an extra surface-water stream into the municipal system, the authority said, with Sardar Khan Zimri — director general for Islamabad’s water wing — supervising that link-up.
Planners have studied the site for many years, the spokesperson added. Officials cast it as one piece of a wider push to ease shortages and firm up supplies over the longer haul. Oversight of efforts to widen the capital’s water base sits with Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi as well as CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf, according to the spokesperson.
Design still decides the final yield
The 5–10 MGD range is not locked in. It still depends on technical clearance, completed drawings and how day-to-day operations are arranged. Alongside the dam, the authority is seeking other intakes and ways to run today’s pipes and treatment more steadily and efficiently.
Growth in population and use is tightening Islamabad’s water balance. Officials present Shahdara Dam as one answer to that squeeze, while stressing that real gains will follow whatever design and rollout finally emerge.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Islamabad mein Shahdara Dam ka kaam jald shuru hone wala hai, CDA ne bataya. Yeh dam shehar ko rozana lagbhag 5 se 10 million gallons pani de sakta hai. Mukammal hone ka irada lagbhag do saal ka hai. Agar yeh ban gaya to gharanon ke liye pani ki kami kuch had tak kam ho sakti hai.
