Federal Water Minister Mian Muhammad Moeen Wattoo, with WAPDA Chairman Lieutenant General Muhammad Saeed (Retired), visited Diamer Basha Dam and the Dasu Hydropower Project on 28 October to review construction progress at both sites.
They inspected major construction sites at both projects. Project teams briefed the minister on ongoing work at various fronts. In talks with WAPDA staff, consultants and contractors, he stressed why the schemes matter for Pakistan’s water, food and energy security and said every effort should go into finishing them on time and to the agreed quality.
Barseen Bridge and relocated KKH
At Dasu, the minister inaugurated Barseen Bridge, a 225-metre arch RCC (reinforced cement concrete) bridge on the Relocated Karakoram Highway, known as RKKH-1. The 20.4-kilometre RKKH-1 is being built under the Dasu Hydropower Project to CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) standards and is expected to open to traffic by February 2027.
Planned capacity at both projects
On completion, Diamer Basha Dam is planned to store 8.1 MAF of water and generate 4,500 MW of electricity. Dasu, a run-of-the-river hydropower project, is planned for 4,320 MW in two stages of 2,160 MW each.
