The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a show-cause notice to Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan, putting the MQM election symbol at risk after the party failed to hold intra-party elections by an extended deadline. In the notice dated 26 October 2026, the Commission asked the party to explain why it should not be declared ineligible to obtain or keep an election symbol for upcoming polls.
According to the notice, MQM Pakistan did not meet requirements under Sections 208, 209 and 215 of the Elections Act 2017—the main law that sets rules for parties and elections in Pakistan. The Commission linked the failure to the party’s delay in completing internal elections within the time it had been granted.
Why the Election Commission acted
Through an order on 16 April 2026, the ECP had already given MQM Pakistan more time to organise intra-party elections. Under that extension, the party was required to complete the polls by 15 October 2026. The Commission says those elections were not held within that period.
Under Section 209 of the Elections Act 2017 and Rule 158 of the Election Rules 2017, a political party must file a certificate with the ECP within seven days of finishing its intra-party elections, confirming that the polls took place. The notice treats the missed schedule as a breach of those compliance duties.
What the show-cause notice demands
MQM Pakistan has been told to submit its written reply within 14 days of the notice. If it does not respond in time, the ECP said it will take further action as provided in law.
The Commission also stated that if legal requirements remain unmet, a party can be barred from getting or retaining an election symbol for future elections. That warning sits at the centre of the current dispute over the MQM election symbol and the party’s standing on the ballot.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- 16 April 2026: ECP order sets an extended deadline for MQM Pakistan’s intra-party elections.
- 15 October 2026: Deadline for those internal polls; the Commission says they were not held.
- 26 October 2026: ECP issues a show-cause notice citing Sections 208, 209 and 215 of the Elections Act 2017.
- Within 14 days of the notice: MQM Pakistan must file its reply or face further legal steps.
What happens next
The immediate next step is the party’s response to the ECP. Until that reply is examined, no final decision on the symbol has been announced in the notice itself. Further action, if any, will follow under the Elections Act 2017 once the Commission reviews the case.
For voters and party workers, the practical stake is whether MQM Pakistan keeps formal access to an election symbol when the next polls are held—an outcome that now depends on how it answers the Commission and whether it meets the Act’s outstanding requirements.
