Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given provincial authorities 15 days to deliver a 100 per cent improvement in cleanliness across Punjab, after reviewing the Suthra Punjab mission in a special meeting. She expressed dissatisfaction with solid waste management companies and ordered steps to strengthen sanitation in cities and villages.
Shift to self-operated waste services
The meeting decided in principle to discontinue solid waste management firms over unsatisfactory performance. Participants agreed to shift to self-operated waste management in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Dera Ghazi Khan. Some accounts of the same session also named Multan among cities moving to the self-run model.
Maryam Nawaz sought a full account of savings expected through self-operation. She asked all deputy commissioners to submit details of the machinery needed for cleanliness work and ordered them to physically verify equipment already available in their districts.
Roads, markets, villages and staff
Citing dust and dirt on roads, the chief minister directed that main roads be washed daily. She ordered measures to fine people who dump waste in fruit, vegetable and grain markets, and anyone who litters after cleaning teams finish their work. The meeting also discussed fines for owners of vacant plots where garbage accumulates, but did not announce a final decision on that proposal.
Villages are to be cleaned on alternate days. Targets were set so every district has enough sanitation staff and machinery. Deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners must meet Field Monitoring Officers (FMOs)—staff who check fieldwork—every week. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), meaning measurable work targets, will be used to judge those officers’ performance. Sanitation workers’ salaries must be paid on time in every city and locality.
Deputy commissioners from Multan, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Hafizabad, Muzaffargarh and other districts presented progress reports. A follow-up meeting on the Suthra Punjab mission will take place after one week to review the Punjab cleanliness drive.
