Punjab’s health leadership has sketched out the clinical layout of the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Lahore, saying the campus will house ten bunkers for radiation treatment and a dedicated children’s cancer wing as officials work toward an earlier start of services.

Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique jointly led a midweek review in Lahore with NSICT&R board chair Captain (Retd.) Zahid Saeed. He also named surgical theatres, an intensive care unit and an emergency section with 30 beds among the planned amenities. The session examined construction status and steps that could bring the facility online sooner.

What the campus is meant to offer

Rafique said the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research is being built by the Punjab government in Lahore at a cost put at about Rs75 billion. Site work continues around the clock, he told the meeting, and the complex is intended to become Pakistan’s first cancer hospital operated entirely by the public sector. Care, he added, would not be refused to any patient—including people with advanced third- or fourth-stage disease.

Services expected on site include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, endoscopy and related procedures. The minister said patients arriving from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and other parts of the country could also use the centre, describing the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Lahore as a national resource rather than a Punjab-only venture. He noted that cancer care often empties household savings across income groups.

Building in two stages

The opening stage, according to the minister, covers the principal hospital block, bone-marrow services, an outpatient cancer clinic, housing for doctors and a mosque. A later stage will add a separate 300-bed structure and a multi-level car park.

IDAP—the Infrastructure Development Authority of the Punjab—chief executive Captain (Retd.) Shahmeer Iqbal briefed participants on current site activity. Zahid Saeed said teams are pushing to wrap up the first stage as soon as possible and that oversight continues. Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood said IDAP has been told to keep to the agreed schedule so that thousands of patients can reach care meeting international benchmarks.

Who attended the review

Among those present were King Edward Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayaz, Brigadier (Retd.) Shoaib, board member Prof. Zeba, Additional Secretary (Technical) Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Waseem, the project director and other officers. Joining by video were health economist Dr. Muhammad Adnan Khan, NSICT&R Dean Dr. Qaiser Bashir and PITB Director Nosheen Fayyaz.
