Lucky Cement has approved a Lucky Cement Karachi plant expansion of 3.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA, or million tonnes a year) at its Karachi works, the company said in a filing with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX, the country’s main equities market). Once finished, its installed cement capacity in Pakistan is expected to reach 18.8 MTPA.
The board of directors cleared the projects on 28 October. Commercial operations are expected by December 2027. The company said the work is a brownfield expansion—extra capacity on an existing site—and will be tied into a cement grinding facility already being installed at Karachi.
What the Karachi and Pezu numbers mean
After the Lucky Cement Karachi plant expansion, the Karachi plant’s installed cement capacity is expected to rise to 8.55 MTPA. Together with capacity at the Pezu plant, the company’s total in Pakistan is expected to stand at 18.80 MTPA.
The company linked the move to domestic demand and growing export demand for cement and clinker (the intermediate material from which cement is made). It said that after the brownfield work it expects to strengthen its place as Pakistan’s largest cement maker and exporter of cement and clinker, while also growing through overseas units.
Energy projects alongside the expansion
Directors also approved power projects at Karachi and Pezu. At Karachi, plans include additional wind turbines with a combined 22.5 MW and a 10 MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant, which uses leftover process heat to generate electricity. At Pezu, the package includes a 15 MW solar plant and a 15 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), which stores power for later use.
When these schemes are done, renewable capacity for cement operations is expected to meet about 60% of energy needs, including power for the new 3.20 MTPA at Karachi. The energy projects are scheduled for completion between the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2027 and the second quarter of fiscal year 2028.
Overseas capacity after Karachi work
Beyond Pakistan, Lucky Cement pointed to ongoing expansion at Nyumba Ya Akiba in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After the Karachi increase and that overseas work, consolidated production capacity across Pakistan and foreign operations is expected to reach 26.65 MTPA.
The company framed the Lucky Cement Karachi plant expansion as part of meeting home and export demand while cutting reliance on grid power through its own renewables mix.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Lucky Cement ne Karachi plant par saalana 3.2 million ton cement ki capacity barhane ka faisla kiya hai. Yeh izafa December 2027 tak shuru hone ki umeed hai, jis ke baad Karachi plant ki capacity 8.55 MTPA ho sakti hai. Poore Pakistan mein company ki capacity 18.8 MTPA tak pahunchne ka andaza hai. Saath hi wind, solar aur heat se bijli ke projects bhi approve hue hain, taake zyada power khud banaye ja sake.
