Polio cases in Pakistan in 2026 have reached eight after officials confirmed infection in a 13-month-old girl from Union Council Janbaz-B in Tehsil Bara, Khyber District, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The child is the latest known wild poliovirus patient in the country this year. Officials place the case in a district that has already recorded one earlier infection in 2026.

Where the latest case was found

The confirmed patient lives in Union Council Janbaz-B, Tehsil Bara, in Khyber District. That makes this the second polio case reported from Khyber District in 2026.

Khyber sits in KP, the province that has now logged six of Pakistan’s eight confirmed cases so far this year. The remaining national total outside KP is therefore two cases, based on the same official count.

What the national count shows

With this confirmation, the current polio cases in Pakistan stand at eight for 2026. Six of those have been reported from KP, underlining where transmission is still being detected most often among the year’s confirmed patients.

Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that can cause lifelong paralysis, mainly in young children. Health teams rely on repeated oral vaccine campaigns to close gaps in protection, especially in areas where the virus is still found.

What families in affected areas should know

Parents and caregivers in Khyber District and across KP should treat every door-to-door or fixed-site vaccination round as essential, even if a child has received drops before. Missed doses leave infants and toddlers at higher risk when the virus is circulating nearby.

Further details on how the girl was diagnosed, her clinical condition, and the next vaccination schedule for the union council were not included in the confirmation shared by officials.
