Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), the utility that supplies electricity across much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has disconnected 351 high-loss transformers province-wide until outstanding dues are cleared. The step was announced from Peshawar on 31 October in a press release issued by PESCO Chief Akhtar Hameed Khan, who said the drive would continue until financial losses are recovered.

Where the cut-offs were concentrated

A circle-wise breakdown released with the statement shows Khyber Circle recorded the highest number of disconnections: 116 transformers were cut off over Rs117 million in arrears. Swat Circle followed with 94 transformers disconnected over Rs100 million in unpaid bills.

Bannu Circle saw 41 transformers cut off over Rs40 million in defaults, while Peshawar Circle had eight transformers disconnected over Rs22.5 million. In Buner, PESCO disconnected 39 industrial and five domestic transformers. Shangla recorded 43 disconnections and Dir five, linked to unpaid dues and electricity theft. In D.I. Khan Circle, six transformers were cut off in a single day.

How PESCO says supply can return

PESCO said electricity is being restored promptly for consumers who settle the outstanding dues tied to their transformers. Officials are also holding negotiations with affected consumers through Khuli Kachehris — open public forums where residents can meet company staff.

High-loss transformers are those where large shares of supplied power go unpaid or unaccounted for, often through unpaid bills or theft. Cutting them off is a pressure tool: entire clusters of homes or businesses sharing a transformer lose supply until the arrears linked to that unit are addressed.

What happens next

According to the company chief, the crackdown will keep going until the financial losses are recovered. Consumers who clear dues for their transformers can expect reconnection under the process PESCO described. Those who cannot pay at once may need to use the open forums to negotiate how arrears will be settled, based on what local officials agree in those meetings.
