Police in Karachi have confirmed through DNA that a child whose body was found in a Quaidabad drain on 19 August was six-year-old Gulalai. Her father, Abdul Aziz, said officers told him the samples matched those taken from her mother, ending weeks of uncertainty for the family.

How Gulalai went missing and was found

Gulalai disappeared on 13 August from outside her home in Majid Colony. A missing-person case was registered the next day at Quaidabad police station. On 19 August, the naked body of a girl, wrapped in a sack and beyond visual recognition, was recovered from a drain near Mehran Highway. Police moved the body to Jinnah Hospital for a post-mortem examination and collected DNA for identification.

According to Abdul Aziz, his wife’s DNA was taken on 27 August. He said police later informed him that the samples had matched, confirming that the Karachi girl Gulalai was the child found in the drain.

Medical findings and the police probe

Medical findings in the case showed no evidence of sexual assault. Authorities say one suspect has been taken into custody and is being questioned, and that the investigation remains open. Officers have pointed to the absence of CCTV cameras in the area as a difficulty for the inquiry. There is also suspicion that the accused may be a resident of the same locality.
