Pakistan army voices cautious Iran-US mediation hope

Fresh Pakistan Afghanistan border clash claims near Angoor Adda and Paktia coincide with the army’s cautious optimism on Iran-US talks and a UN diplomacy push.

Pakistan is managing two sharp regional pressures at once: a Pakistan Afghanistan border clash marked by competing blame, and a diplomatic track in which the army says it remains cautiously optimistic about talks between Iran and the United States.

Near the Durand Line at Angoor Adda in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, the Taliban defence ministry said Pakistani forces mounted four drone strikes on the local market and the commissariat building around 1pm the previous day, without a clear threat. It said its forces then fired on Pakistani military positions, claimed Pakistani soldiers were killed and wounded and facilities damaged, and said its own side took no fatalities. A Pakistani official gave a different account, saying Taliban mortar fire into north-west Pakistan killed one civilian and wounded five. Who opened fire first remains contested.

Casualties reported along the frontier

Local sources in Paktia said that on Friday, 8 Aqrab, an unexploded mortar round attributed to Pakistani troops later detonated in Shapoli Khawla village, Dand Patan district, near the Durand Line, killing one child and wounding four others after children approached it. The same sources said two children were killed two days earlier by heavy fire near the Torkham border town in Nangarhar, and that Pakistani forces had struck Afghan border provinces several times over five days. Those Afghan-side claims have not been matched in these accounts by a detailed Pakistani confirmation of the Paktia and Torkham child casualties.

Taken together, the Pakistan Afghanistan border clash reports point to a volatile frontier in which civilian harm is alleged on both sides of the line, even as the basic sequence of each firefight is still disputed.

Cautious hope on Iran-US talks

On Friday, army spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the institution holds cautious optimism about mediation between Iran and the United States, while warning that powerful actors oppose that path and see continuing war as serving their interests. He did not name those actors. Pointing to Field Marshal Asim Munir’s two October visits to Tehran—including a Monday meeting with Iranian officials alongside Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin—he asked why the field marshal would travel twice if there were no positive sign. He declined to detail the talks or say whether Washington backed the trips.

Asked about Iran joining the Mecca joint defence arrangement, Chaudhry said the text does not block new members and that any country sharing a view on collective deterrence and regional peace would be welcome, with the final decision resting with the pact’s parties. On sending more forces to help defend Saudi Arabia, he said that would depend on ground developments and a political decision.

Diplomacy at the UN and in Islamabad

At the UN Security Council, Pakistan’s acting permanent representative Usman Jadoon expressed concern at the deterioration of Iran’s nuclear file and said differences should be settled through diplomacy, with space for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)—the UN nuclear watchdog—to work independently and without obstruction. China’s UN envoy Fu Cong, speaking in the same setting, criticised US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and called for an end to double standards and continued talks. Reports say US officials have warned some regional states about a possible return to strikes after the 3 November midterm elections and about retaliatory risks; Iran has said it would answer any military attack harshly.

In Islamabad, Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan met Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam. Citing the government’s press arm, the two discussed regional developments and bilateral ties. Khan said true friends stand together in hard days and that Pakistani hearts are with Iranian brothers and sisters, offered condolences over Iranian leaders’ sacrifices, prayed for Iran’s peace and progress, and spoke of visiting Iran soon—an idea the ambassador welcomed.
