Sindh sugarcane growers are pressing for a support price of Rs650 per maund and for mills to begin crushing without further delay. The Sindh Abadgar Ittehad says late official price decisions and a slow start to the crushing season have already hurt farm incomes across the province.
Why growers say the delay costs them
According to the growers’ group, cane that remains in the field after it is ready for harvest can shed weight once colder weather sets in. That weight loss, they argue, shrinks the payment growers receive when the crop finally reaches the mill. Their demand pairs a higher Sindh sugarcane floor price with an earlier crushing calendar so less of the crop’s value is lost before it is processed.
Karachi march on November 4
The Sindh Abadgar Ittehad plans a protest march in Karachi on November 4. The route is to begin at the Karachi Press Club and end at the Chief Minister’s House. Organisers are framing the demonstration around crop support prices and the timing of crushing, not a single commodity alone.
Wheat and paddy concerns raised in Hyderabad
At a meeting in Hyderabad, the group’s president, Nawab Zubair Talpur, also spoke against a reported wheat support level of Rs4,500 per maund. He called instead for Rs5,000 per maund. He further raised alarm that paddy was selling for Rs2,600 per maund in upper Sindh, signalling that sugarcane is only one part of a wider price dispute for Sindh’s farming communities.
What happens next hinges on whether provincial authorities announce a cane support price near the growers’ Rs650 demand and whether crushing starts in time to limit field losses. The November 4 Karachi march is the growers’ immediate pressure point for those decisions.
