Why AI Agents Could Reshape the Web for Machines, Not People

AI agents internet impact is growing: personal agents that book flights or negotiate prices strain sites built for people, and platforms are split on blocking them.

AI agents are software tools that act on a person's behalf online, for example by booking a flight, comparing prices or asking for a refund. The AI agents internet impact is already visible in how websites respond, because many now block agents that users send to negotiate prices or plan trips. Whether the web is rebuilt around these agents, or kept designed mainly for people, is still an open question.

Why agents do not fit the old rules

For years, website operators have sorted visitors into two groups: people, and bots that perform automated tasks such as copying page content. AI agents do not fit neatly into either group. They act for individual people on tasks that can be legitimate and useful, but they work at machine speed. Some platforms, especially those focused on security, have chosen to ban them outright.

The friction is already showing. Reports have described users struggling to deploy their agents on sites such as Pizza Hut, and Yelp does not allow AI to book restaurant reservations. Amazon has blocked agents linked to Meta's Muse app and is in a legal dispute with the AI startup Perplexity. A judge ruled in Perplexity's favour, but Amazon has appealed, arguing that agents make it harder to tell ads seen by humans from those served to bots, which it says threatens its advertising business.

Why the shift may spread

Ethan Mollick, an associate professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, expects the restrictions to affect the wider web. If people learn that agents can request refunds or negotiate prices, customer service desks could be overwhelmed, and he has written that people will grow annoyed when their agents are not allowed to act for them. Meta's Muse was downloaded 5 million times in its first month, and agentic web traffic reportedly tripled from August to September. Most of that traffic goes to e-commerce sites, which gives platforms a commercial reason to let agents shop, and Shopify is already giving agents their own checkout lanes.

What could change for ordinary users

The concern is less about agents themselves than about what the web becomes. Sites could grow harder for people to use, with more verification checks, prices that vary by visitor, and recommendations that may be shaped by advertising or platform commissions. Google, Anthropic and OpenAI have promised that agents will give consumers more bargaining power, and agents could help with tasks such as contesting medical bills or comparing car insurance. Security rules, such as keeping card details out of reach of agents, look likely to benefit everyone, while disputes over whether businesses can block agents will shape the AI agents internet impact on everyday users.

Aasan alfaaz mein

AI agents woh software hain jo aap ki taraf se internet par kaam karte hain, jaise flight book karna ya qeemat compare karna. Kayi websites inhe block kar rahi hain, is liye agent ka kaam ruk sakta hai. Agar platforms inke liye raaste khol dein to shopping aasan ho sakti hai, lekin qeematein aur sifarishen ishtehar ya commission se mutasir ho sakti hain. Aakhir mein rules tay karenge ke internet aap ke liye kaam karega ya aap ke khilaf.

FAQ

On the internet, AI agents that act for people are changing how websites are built, how prices may be shown, and how much bargaining power consumers have. Whether that helps or hurts people depends on the rules that are still being written about what agents may do online.
