AI healthcare in Pakistan could get its first dedicated artificial intelligence hospital if a proposed partnership between Riphah International University and the Chinese healthcare technology company Tairex goes ahead. The university hopes to bring Tairex's Agent Hospital system to Pakistan. The plan is still at an early stage, and no opening date, location or cost has been set out publicly so far.
What AI healthcare means in this plan
Artificial intelligence, or AI, refers to computer systems that find patterns in large amounts of data and use them to support tasks such as analysis and decision-making. Tairex says its Agent Hospital system works in two ways. It uses virtual patients to train doctors and medical staff, and AI doctor agents that help physicians in real clinical settings.
The system is designed to support doctors rather than replace them, and human doctors remain responsible for medical decisions. Tairex is an AI healthcare company incubated by the Institute for AI Industry Research at Tsinghua University in China. Li Zheng, the company's chief marketing officer, said Tairex was developing a strategic partnership with Riphah. The proposed work would cover medical education, clinical diagnosis and research, including virtual consultation rooms for students and doctors, AI-assisted clinical decisions, and follow-up studies of patients.
Why AI healthcare in Pakistan is on the policy agenda
The plan comes at a time when Pakistan's health system faces long-running problems. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2025–26 says the sector has limited financial resources and unequal access to healthcare facilities. Public health spending was 0.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP, the total value of goods and services produced in the economy) in fiscal 2024–25.
Pakistan's National AI Policy 2025 lists healthcare as a priority for AI adoption. Targeted uses include digitising medical records and telemedicine, which means consulting doctors remotely. Riphah's chancellor, Hassan Muhammad Khan, said in a video message that the university was keen on the partnership. He praised the Chinese company's technical capabilities and its focus on practical healthcare problems.
What has happened so far and what comes next
Riphah has already begun bringing AI into medical education. In August, the university ran a three-day training programme in Islamabad for health sciences faculty, covering AI in clinical practice, research and teaching. That training is the most concrete step described so far, while the hospital itself remains a proposal that the university hopes to pursue.
What happens next depends on both sides formalising the partnership, and no timetable has been announced. Until then, the project should be read as an early plan rather than a running service. Readers should watch for an agreement, a site and a launch date before expecting any change in care.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Riphah University aur Chinese firm Tairex Pakistan ka pehla AI hospital banane ki tajweez par kaam kar rahe hain. Is mansoobay mein AI ka istemal doctors ki training, tashkhees aur research ke liye hoga, aur faisle doctor hi karenge. Abhi yeh sirf ek proposal hai, aur iski tareekh aur jagah tay nahi hui. Aam logon ke liye abhi koi fori tabdeeli nahi hai.
