US President Donald Trump has claimed credit for halting the India-Pakistan conflict, saying he threatened both countries with a 250 per cent trade tariff. Speaking at a campaign rally, he said the warning made both sides stop shooting. India disputes this account and says the ceasefire came only after Pakistan asked for a halt to military action.
Trump's account
Trump described a direct ultimatum to the leaders of both countries, which he said was delivered while the two nuclear-armed neighbours were fighting. He said he told them that they would not be able to do business with the United States and that massive tariffs would follow. In his telling, the pressure made both sides back off, and the war was over.
Trump also said eleven planes were shot down during the engagement, and he presented the outcome as a personal achievement. “I've settled eight wars. Did I get the Nobel Prize? No,” he said, expressing frustration that his diplomacy had not earned international recognition. The remarks were part of his broader boasts about his interventions abroad.
India's response
India has repeatedly disputed Trump's claim about the loss of 11 aircraft, and it has rejected any external mediation. New Delhi says the ceasefire understanding during Operation Sindoor was reached only after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations, the senior army officer who handles operational matters, contacted his Indian counterpart to request a halt in military action. India has not accepted that the tariff threat Trump described was the reason for the pause.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 as what it called a targeted response, aimed at terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. India said the bases it targeted had been used to plan the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. After Indian strikes on key launchpads, the operation was paused on May 10 following a formal request from the Pakistani side.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- April 22: A terrorist attack in Pahalgam takes place. India later says the bases it targeted were used to plan it.
- May 7: India launches Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
- May 10: India pauses the operation after a formal request from Pakistan.
Where the accounts stand
Trump says tariff threats ended the fighting, while India says the ceasefire followed a request from Pakistan's military. The two accounts conflict on the central point, and India does not confirm the tariff threat itself. Trump's repeated claim keeps the question of who brought the fighting to an end in public debate.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Donald Trump ka dawa hai ke unhon ne 250 fisad tariff ki dhamki de kar India aur Pakistan ki jang rokwa di. India ka kehna hai ke ceasefire Pakistan ki darkhwast par hua tha, aur wo kisi bahari saalisi ko qabool nahi karta. Abhi tak tariff ki dhamki ki tasdeeq nahi hui, is liye agle sarkari bayanat par nazar rakhein.
