Pakistan's weekly inflation rate rose 0.65 percent in the week ended October 22, 2026, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said on Friday. The increase was measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), a weekly index that tracks the prices of 51 essential items across 17 urban centres. The index rose to 374.84 points from 372.43 points the week before, for the combined consumption group.

The SPI uses 2015-16 as its base year, set at 100 points, so its readings can be compared over time. On a year-on-year basis, the index was 11.85 percent higher than a year earlier. Because it is compiled every week, the SPI picks up short-term price swings that longer-term figures can smooth over.

Which prices rose and which fell

Of the 51 items tracked, 19 (37.25 percent) became dearer during the week, 12 (23.53 percent) got cheaper and 20 (39.22 percent) stayed the same. The largest weekly increase was in LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, which rose 22.44 percent. Chicken went up 12.20 percent and onions 4.19 percent, while wheat flour rose 1.00 percent and plain bread 1.66 percent.

On the other side, tomatoes fell 21.99 percent and petrol dropped 3.63 percent. Diesel eased 1.68 percent, bananas 2.42 percent and potatoes 1.38 percent. Sugar and basmati broken rice each fell 0.35 percent.

Income groups and the yearly picture

The PBS also reported the index for each consumption group. The lowest group, up to Rs17,732, saw a 0.51 percent rise, moving to 358.18 points from 356.35. The highest group, above Rs44,175, recorded the sharpest weekly increase at 0.74 percent, while the three middle groups rose between 0.49 and 0.56 percent.

Over the past year, the largest increases were in LPG (107.12 percent), onions (72.81 percent), electricity for Q1 (58.59 percent), petrol (44.17 percent) and diesel (41.56 percent). Tomatoes (71.72 percent lower) and potatoes (40.75 percent lower) were among the items that cost less than a year ago.
