Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the government would give Daanish schools every resource it can, as the Ministry of Education signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gauth AI in Islamabad. Under the deal, the artificial intelligence study platform will provide 4,000 subscriptions to teachers across the country, and 1,000 of them will go to educators linked with Daanish schools. An MoU is a written agreement that records what the signing parties intend to do together.
What the agreement covers
The company will also provide 180 free subscriptions to students in Pakistan, according to Maria Kohan, regional director of global public policy at ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. Kohan described Gauth as an AI-powered study platform that offers step-by-step explanations, personalised tutoring and interactive tools for learners working through school subjects. She said the platform has more than 200 million users worldwide, and that the tools are designed to help teaching and improve how students learn.
Kohan also pointed to a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) feed that TikTok launched in Pakistan together with the IT ministry and the federal education ministry. She said the Gauth launch was a further move in the company's work on learning and technology.
Officials on the plan
At the ceremony, the prime minister called the agreement an important step toward wider educational opportunities. He said the government had already offered facilities to students, and he described Daanish schools as institutions that provide free education. "There is no dearth of resources," he said, promising that all possible support would reach those schools.
Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima said the initiative fits the prime minister's push for technology-led development. She also said Pakistan would become the second country after the United States to receive paid versions of Gauth AI, and noted that TikTok had already made its own AI technology available in the country.
What is still open
The ceremony did not set out how long the free subscriptions will last, how teachers and students will be chosen, or what access will look like once the free period ends. Until those details are announced, the scope of the offer for individual teachers and students remains unclear.
