Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the government would provide all possible resources to Daanish schools, as the Ministry of Education signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the artificial intelligence (AI) study platform Gauth AI at a ceremony in Islamabad. Under the agreement, the company will give 4,000 free subscriptions to teachers across Pakistan, with 1,000 going to educators linked to the government's Daanish schools initiative. An MoU is a formal written understanding between two parties that sets out what each side commits to.
What the agreement includes
Gauth is an AI-powered study platform that offers step-by-step explanations, personalised tutoring and interactive tools to help students grasp academic concepts. According to Maria Kohan, regional director of global public policy at ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, the platform has more than 200 million users worldwide. Beyond the teacher allocation, the company will provide 180 free subscriptions for local students, and the tools are meant to support teaching and improve learning.
Kohan said technology could foster creativity and widen access to education. She pointed to a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) feed that TikTok launched in Pakistan with the IT ministry and the federal education ministry, and said the Gauth launch was a further step in the company's work on learning.
Government's position
Sharif termed the agreement a significant step towards expanding educational opportunities. He described Daanish schools as institutions that offer free education and said the government had already provided facilities to students. “There is no dearth of resources,” he said, adding that the government would provide all possible resources to the Daanish schools.
Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima said the initiative reflected the prime minister's vision of technology-led development. She also said Pakistan would become the second country after the United States to receive paid versions of Gauth AI, and noted that TikTok had made its own AI technology available in the country.
Questions still open
Several details were not given at the ceremony. The duration of the free subscriptions, the criteria for choosing beneficiaries and the arrangements for access once the free period ends were not announced. Until those details are published, the number of teachers and students who will actually use the tools cannot be confirmed beyond the figures announced. The deal is part of the government's effort to bring digital tools into education and widen access to learning resources.
