Lahore tomatoes sell at Rs250-280 against notified rates

Market surveys on 2 November 2026 found Lahore shoppers still paying far more than Punjab’s official rates for poultry, vegetables and fruit, even after some notified cuts.

Lahore food prices for everyday kitchen items are running well above Punjab’s notified rates, according to market surveys dated 2 November 2026. Shoppers in the city are paying more than the official lists for poultry, vegetables and fruit, widening the gap between what the government notifies and what households actually spend.

Tomatoes, chicken and dates show the widest gaps

Tomatoes illustrate the pattern clearly. Official lists put them at Rs140-175 per kilogram, yet retail stalls were charging Rs250-280. That means a shopper buying one kilogram could pay roughly Rs75 to Rs140 more than the notified band, depending on where they buy and which end of each range applies.

Chicken meat was notified at Rs541 per kilogram but sold for Rs580-650—about Rs39 to Rs109 extra per kilo. Dates showed an even larger stretch: notified rates of Rs310-435 per kilogram contrasted with retail prices of Rs800-2,400. At the high end, a kilogram of dates could cost several times the official figure.

Official cuts have not closed the retail gap

The surveys found the same problem where notified prices had already been reduced. Onions and bitter gourd were among items still selling above the official rate after those cuts. Live chicken prices were brought down to Rs359-373 per kilogram, but birds largely remained unsold, pointing to soft demand at the farm-gate and wet-market level even as dressed meat stayed expensive for consumers.

Taken together, the figures underline how Lahore food prices at the counter can diverge from the province’s price notifications. The disparity is linked to weak enforcement, and consumers are asking for monitoring that continues beyond one-off checks rather than brief drives that fade.

What shoppers are asking for

Households in Lahore are pressing for sustained oversight of retail markets so that notified rates for poultry, vegetables and fruit translate into what is charged at the shop. Without steadier checks, official lists risk remaining a paper benchmark while kitchen budgets absorb the higher street prices.

For now, the concrete picture is simple: on tomatoes, chicken meat and dates especially, what Lahore residents pay is still well above what Punjab has notified, and that gap is shaping weekly food spending.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Lahore mein sabzi, phal aur murghi sarkari rate se mehengi mil rahi hai. Tamatar aur murghi dono notified qeemat se upar bik rahe hain, aur khajoor bohot mehengi hai. Sarkari rate kam hone ke bawajood farq khatam nahi hua. Log chahte hain ke bazaar ki nigrani lagataar rahe taake ghar ka kharcha thoda sambhal sake.
