First live deployment with HugoBank

The HugoHub Pakistan launch has moved from planning to live operations: Singapore-based financial infrastructure firm HugoHub said HugoBank, a digital retail bank, opened its first pilot customer account on the platform on 25 September 2026. The step is HugoHub’s first live deployment with a regulated bank in the country and answers the immediate question of what the firm is doing here—supporting a controlled digital-bank pilot, not a full public launch.

HugoBank is working under a Restricted License from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the central bank, which limits the scope of what it may do while it tests products and processes. The bank was among five applicants chosen for Pakistan’s first digital-bank cohort. HugoHub said the pilot is meant to give HugoBank a controlled setting before it seeks approval for a broader commercial start.

What the platform does for HugoBank

At HugoBank, HugoHub’s core-to-customer system ties together ledgers and account servicing with payments, card management and savings tools that connect to the customer app. An operating portal covers administration, customer service and risk monitoring. HugoHub said the setup is meant to cut duplication between disconnected banking systems and help institutions improve services while managing costs.

The company said the stack has been adapted for Pakistan’s identity, payment and regulatory rules. That includes biometric checks through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), links to payment networks 1LINK and Raast, and settings for withholding tax, Zakat deductions and local reporting, plus support for multiple languages.

HugoHub chief executive David Fergusson said a bank’s technology choices shape “the cost of serving its customers and how easily its products can improve.” The firm was built by a team that previously worked on Hugosave, a consumer finance app in Singapore, and says that experience informs how it works with banks through implementation and go-live. Co-founder and chief product officer Braham Djidjelli said Pakistan’s large population—nearly 260 million people, with limited formal financial access—gives new banks a chance to use modern infrastructure instead of older systems. The World Bank found that only slightly more than a quarter of Pakistani adults held a bank or mobile-money account in 2024; Pakistan introduced its digital-bank framework in 2022 to widen affordable access.

Pilot products and the path to 2027

HugoBank chief executive Asim Hasan said the pilot will let the bank watch real account-opening journeys and see how products and operations fit together. Findings will be used to refine the model before results go to the SBP and the bank seeks approval for commercial operations in early 2027.

During the pilot, HugoBank plans current and savings accounts, gamified money pots and debit cards. After commercial approval, it intends to add retail lending and products aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises. HugoHub said it is also talking with mid-tier banks, insurance brokers, multi-finance firms and other fintech companies about projects from large technology overhauls to smaller operational upgrades—so the HugoHub Pakistan launch with HugoBank may be only the first bank-side use of the platform here.
