Around 51,000 metric tonnes of imported wheat arrived at Karachi Port on Wednesday, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) said, as authorities move to keep the country’s flour supply steady.

KPT said the geared vessel MV Gokova M, with a declared manifest of 51,000 metric tonnes of wheat, was allotted Berths 16 and 17 and reached the port at 12:25 pm on 28 October 2026. The cargo is being handled at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML), the multipurpose terminal that processes bulk goods at the port.

Second wheat vessel due in early November

Another geared vessel, MV Great Rainbow, carrying about 59,132 metric tonnes of wheat, is expected on 3 November 2026, according to KPT. Together, the two ships represent a declared wheat cargo of more than 110,000 metric tonnes.

KPT said the arrivals underline Karachi Port’s ability to handle bulk commodity shipments and to keep essential imports moving through the gateway.

Government stance on reserves and prices

The docking comes days after Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain said the government would maintain strategic wheat reserves of up to six million tonnes. He said there would be no wheat shortage this year and that arrangements were in place to meet national needs.

The minister also said up to 550,000 metric tonnes could be imported according to provincial demand. He described the recent rise in wheat prices as artificial and said prices should return to normal within days. Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif raised the wheat support price by Rs1,000 to Rs4,500 per maund for 2027, the guaranteed rate paid to growers for their crop.
