Pakistan has opened its first biomass energy demonstration plant in Sajawal, Sindh, in a bid to supply cleaner rural fuel, create local work and ease pressure on forests.

The facility sits in Pinnah Reserved Forest. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Sindh government jointly inaugurated it. It is the first of four demonstration sites planned under a national programme meant to show how woody biomass technologies can work in Pakistan.

How the PASBET project fits in

The plant was built under the Promotion and Application of Sustainable Biomass Energy Technologies in Pakistan (PASBET) project. PASBET is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), an international fund that backs environmental projects, and is implemented by UNDP with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.

PASBET runs for five years and is valued at $3.5 million. It is designed to promote sustainable biomass energy across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Biomass here means using forest and agricultural residues—leftover plant material—rather than cutting more trees for fuel.

What the Sajawal plant will do

UNDP said the Pinnah site shows how those residues can support livelihoods through pellet production, community nurseries and efficient cookstoves. Pellets are compressed fuel made from residue; nurseries grow plants for local use; efficient cookstoves burn less fuel and produce less smoke than many traditional stoves.

The initiative also aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions—gases that trap heat in the atmosphere—and to support sustainable forest management, including stronger indigenous plantations. Officials present the plant as a model that can be scaled if communities, government and markets move together.

What UNDP says comes next

UNDP Resident Representative Dr Samuel Rizk said Pakistan does not have to choose between meeting rural energy needs and protecting its forests. He said the plant shows how locally available residues can become cleaner fuel, local opportunity and a more sustainable energy model, and that the task now is to make that model work at scale.

Three further demonstration sites are planned under the same initiative. No dates or locations for those sites beyond the four-province scope of PASBET have been set out in the available details.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Pakistan ne Sindh ke Sajawal mein pehla biomass energy plant khol diya hai. Yeh plant junglat aur kheti ke bachay huey mal se saaf fuel banaye ga. Is se gaon walon ko kaam milne aur janglon par bojh kam hone ki umeed hai. Agay teen aur aise plants banane ka plan hai.
