District police in Lakki Marwat on Wednesday killed two suspected terrorists, including a suicide bomber, in an exchange of fire that authorities say foiled a major attack. The clash followed the spotting of a suspicious car with tinted windows at Gandi Chowk.
According to police, a team moved in after the vehicle drew attention. The occupants opened fire on seeing the personnel and tried to escape. Police returned fire, killing two people inside the car. One of those killed was described as a suspected suicide bomber. A third suspect, who was injured, managed to get away.
What police recovered at the scene
From the vehicle, police said they recovered weapons, ammunition, a banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) flag — TTP is a proscribed militant group — women’s burqas, and other suspicious items. Officers said the haul raised concern that the men were preparing a major act of sabotage. Their intended target and exact plans were still under investigation.
Heavy contingents of district police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the specialised anti-terror wing of the police, later arrived at the site. Authorities took custody of the bodies and began the identification process.
Search for the escaped suspect
A search operation was underway to arrest the injured man who fled. Police have not publicly named the suspects or confirmed a specific target while that work continues.
Official response
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the Lakki Marwat police for acting in time and for putting themselves at risk to protect the public. He said the force would keep up its campaign until the last terrorist was eliminated.
