The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved transferring the powers of the Chief Minister’s Office in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the province’s Governor so that routine administrative work can continue during the state of emergency.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the meeting. Officials framed the step as a way to keep government business running and to tighten administrative coordination while the emergency remains in force.
What the Governor must do
Under the decision, the Governor will manage day-to-day affairs that would ordinarily sit with the Chief Minister’s Office. The Governor will also send the federal government a monthly review explaining how those delegated powers have been used.
The Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing, in a press release, said the cabinet welcomed the move and hoped the KP Advisory Council, under the Governor’s leadership, would make every effort for public welfare, prosperity, and the restoration of law and order in the province.
Other decisions in the same meeting
On a recommendation from the Ministry of Finance, the cabinet approved designs for a new series of currency notes. A cabinet committee formed by the prime minister had consulted stakeholders, and artists and designers from across the country were invited to submit work. Briefers told the meeting the proposed notes would use stronger security features and more durable materials to reduce counterfeiting and lengthen note life. Ministers also approved a Rs10 coin to replace the existing Rs10 banknote.
The federal cabinet ratified a defence cooperation agreement between Pakistan and Kuwait, aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties. The pact was first signed on 11 June 2023 and was later ratified by the Kuwaiti government on 19 July. The meeting also endorsed decisions of the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises from 26 October, and ratified decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases from meetings on 22 January, 26 February, 5, 18 and 27 August, and 11 and 22 September.
