Islamabad — Pakistan's tax return deadline falls on October 31, and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR, the federal tax authority) has warned that misleading filings can bring heavy administrative penalties, automated checks and artificial-intelligence comparisons of data.

Sources said the FBR will take strict action against false information in returns. Taxpayers found concealing assets or tampering with financial records face heavy fines. The board has gathered comprehensive data on citizens' properties and assets across the country and will verify submitted returns through an automated system, with extensive use of AI to test whether figures match that information.

Penalties under Section 182

Under Section 182 and related subsections of the Income Tax Ordinance, the FBR can impose administrative penalties. Sources issued a stern warning to salaried individuals that penalties of up to 75 percent of the tax owed may apply for false declarations. If outstanding penalties are not paid on time, a late fine of Rs1,000 per day also applies, they said.

To avoid costly mistakes, sources advised taxpayers to seek guidance from professional consultants when filing, and to correct any errors before the October 31 cutoff.

Advance tax notices for salaried workers

Separately, FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has taken notice of advance income tax notices sent to salaried individuals. According to sources, he considers advance income tax unjustified for people whose only income is their salary. Individuals who also earn from other sources may still be liable for adjustable advance tax, sources added.

Salaried taxpayers across the country had been receiving notices to pay advance income tax on a quarterly basis. Under the proposed measure, people whose only income is salary would no longer get those notices. Any additional advance income tax already collected from salaried individuals would be adjusted immediately, sources said. The step is meant to ease the financial burden on that group amid wider concern that the tax load on salaried earners should be shared more fairly across income groups.

What filers should do before October 31

Anyone still preparing a return has little time left. Sources stressed accurate disclosure and early correction of mistakes, given that returns will be matched against the FBR's asset database and AI-assisted checks. Professional advice was recommended where filings are complex.
