The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has put a new proposal to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI): that the chairmanship of a planned parliamentary committee on electoral reforms be shared in turn by all parties that take part, rather than locked with one side.
Sources familiar with the talks said the PPP is ready to ease its stance on permanent leadership of the panel and wants every participating party to take turns in the chair. The move is meant to keep negotiations on electoral reforms alive while differences over who leads and who sits on the committee remain unresolved.
What the committee would look like
The proposed body would have 30 members. Seats are expected to be allotted to parties in line with their strength in parliament, so larger groups would hold more places than smaller ones.
PTI has pressed for a different formula: representation on the committee equal to that of the government. That demand sits alongside the leadership dispute and helps explain why composition and chairmanship are still unsettled.
How the chairmanship dispute shifted
During earlier negotiations, the PPP and the government had reportedly settled on giving the committee’s chairmanship to the PPP. The latest offer changes that picture by treating the gavel as a rotating role among all parties involved, not a fixed PPP post.
The committee’s purpose is electoral reforms—changes to how elections are run and regulated—but the two sides have not yet agreed on either its makeup or who will lead it. Until those points are closed, the panel itself remains only a proposal.
What happens next
Sources said PTI will take the PPP’s rotating-chair idea through internal party consultations before it decides whether to accept the offer and join the committee. No final response from PTI has been reported.
For now, the talks hinge on two linked questions: whether leadership rotates among parties, and whether seats follow parliamentary strength or match the government’s share, as PTI has demanded.
Aasan alfaaz mein
PPP ne PTI ko offer diya hai ke electoral reforms wali parliamentary committee ka chairman sab parties ke beech baari baari se ho. Yeh committee 30 members ki hogi aur abhi composition aur leadership par ittefaq nahi hua. PTI pehle hukumat jitni representation maang rahi hai, aur ab party andaron mashwara karegi ke offer manna hai ya nahi. Aam logon ke liye seedha matlab yeh hai ke election rules badalne wali baat abhi sirf baat-cheet ke stage par hai.
