License cancelled after Lahore factory check

A Punjab Food Authority raid at a Salva Foods production unit in Lahore has ended with the company’s license cancelled, Punjab Food Safety Minister Salma Butt announced. Inspectors said they found about 3,000 kilograms of expired and contaminated raw materials at the factory, prompting the action over food safety breaches.

Salva Foods manufactures ketchup, mayonnaise, biscuits and chutneys. The minister said the find raised serious concern about how safety rules were being followed at the plant.

What inspectors reported on site

During the check, officials reported fungus-infested ingredients giving off a foul smell, along with unsafe mixtures that did not meet food safety standard operating procedures (SOPs)—the basic hygiene and handling rules factories must follow. Material described in the minister’s account included expired raw stock, dirty and foul-smelling fungus-hit pulp, a frozen egg mixture judged harmful, and an unsafe mayonnaise mix.

Butt personally led the operation. She examined contaminated barrels and directed officials as they went through the factory and stored production materials. After the discoveries, she announced that the company’s license was cancelled because of the violations.

Why the find matters for food safety

Expired and fungus-contaminated ingredients can pose health risks if they enter products meant for people to eat. Food makers are expected to keep raw materials safe and to follow food safety rules at every stage of production. The Punjab Food Authority raid and the minister’s order close Salva Foods’ legal licence to operate under the cancelled permit; the announcement did not spell out any further court or criminal steps.
