Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC, the ceasefire line in disputed Kashmir) and across the world will mark Kashmir Black Day on 27 October, Tuesday, as the 79th anniversary of the arrival of Indian troops in Srinagar in 1947. Organisers say the day renews the demand for the right to self-determination and draws attention to the long-running Kashmir dispute and alleged human rights violations.
How the day will be marked
Officials and community groups say protest rallies, processions and public gatherings are planned in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, and in other countries. The aim, they say, is to keep the dispute in public view and to press for an early, peaceful settlement in line with Kashmiri aspirations.
Speakers at planned events are expected to urge the international community to play a stronger role in securing self-determination, and to restate calls for implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions and related international commitments on Kashmir.
Mirpur and Sargodha programmes
In Mirpur, AJK, a protest rally followed by a procession and demonstration is scheduled at the District Courts premises at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Representatives of the administration, civil society and social and political organisations are due to take part, according to official sources.
In Sargodha district, the district administration has finalised arrangements for Kashmir Black Day on 27 October with a seminar at 9:30 a.m. at the Arts Council Complex, followed by a protest rally. A review meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Ahmad Mughees, who assigned tasks to relevant departments. The seminar will include a minute of silence and a photographic exhibition on alleged abuses in occupied Kashmir. The rally will start from the Arts Council Complex and end at GPO Chowk. Participants are to wear black armbands, caps and masks; black flags, banners and displays of solidarity are to be placed along the route and at key sites. Similar events are planned in other tehsils of the district.
Educational institutions in Sargodha have been directed to hold speech and writing competitions and to screen documentaries on the situation in occupied Kashmir. Special prayers for the freedom, safety and well-being of Kashmiris are to be offered at mosques. Citizens, traders, civil society representatives and volunteers have been invited to join the rally. Security, traffic management, sound systems and other logistics were also reviewed, with departments told to finish preparations on time.
Evening blackout and public messaging
As part of the Sargodha observance, a five-minute blackout is planned at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Exterior and decorative lights on government buildings are to be switched off to show solidarity and to register protest against alleged Indian atrocities in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The ADC also directed the Municipal Corporation and other departments to display Pakistani and Kashmiri flags, banners and panaflexes on major roads and government buildings, and called for publicity, including on social media, about the Kashmiri struggle for freedom.
