Road accidents in Punjab during October left 464 people dead and 23,543 others seriously injured, the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) said on Monday. The service counted 44,797 road traffic accidents across the province in that month, according to its monthly operational performance figures.

A spokesperson said Rescue 1122 crews responded to 231,056 emergencies of all kinds in October and rescued 233,210 victims. Punjab Emergency Service Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer, reviewing the department’s performance, voiced serious concern about the rise in road crashes and deaths.

Where the crashes were concentrated

Lahore reported the largest share of road accidents in Punjab during October, with 7,874 incidents. Multan followed with 2,838, then Faisalabad with 2,615, Gujranwala with 2,092 and Sheikhupura with 1,714.

Fatalities were also highest in Lahore, at 35. Sheikhupura recorded 31 deaths, Faisalabad 30, and Multan and Gujranwala 24 each. The figures point to heavy pressure on urban and peri-urban corridors, not only on a single city.

Emergency workload beyond the roads

Road calls sat inside a wider October caseload. The same monthly review listed 1,726 fire emergencies and 94 drowning incidents across Punjab.

Directors of the Punjab Emergency Service, heads of various wings and the provincial monitoring officer attended the review meeting in person. District emergency officers joined by video link.

What riders are being told

Dr Naseer appealed to motorcyclists to keep to the left side of the road and to stay under 50 kilometres per hour. He warned that each one-kilometre-per-hour rise in speed increased the risk of a fatal crash by four to five per cent.

Those cautions sit against the October toll already logged by Rescue 1122. With tens of thousands of Punjab road traffic incidents in a single month, even small changes in rider behaviour are being framed by officials as life-saving habits rather than optional advice.
