Around 120 Swabi schools sealed after district inspections found their buildings unsafe for students, officials in Swabi said. Most of the closed institutions are private. Teams working across all four tehsils reported cracks in walls and rooms that made the premises unfit for teaching and a risk to children’s lives.
Why the buildings were closed
The campaign covering public and private schools began after a private school building collapsed in Peshawar, killing 31 children and a female teacher. Assistant commissioners are leading the inspection teams and have been told to finish the exercise without discrimination, with student safety as the clear priority.
Teams sealed institutions judged dangerous even when some school administrations objected or offered excuses. Officials said there would be no compromise on safety and that decisions were taken on the spot once a building’s condition had been assessed.
How far the checks have gone
Deputy Commissioner Nasarullah Khan said inspections would continue without interruption until every school in the district is checked. Of roughly 2,000 public and private schools in Swabi, 1,224 had been inspected and about 120 sealed, he said. The remaining schools would be inspected soon.
“We will not stop until we complete the task in accordance with the provincial government’s directives,” he said. Of the Swabi schools sealed so far, most are private, reflecting where inspectors found the greatest structural concern in this first wave of checks.
What happens to students next
Swabi has 289,180 students in total. The deputy commissioner said the administration did not have separate enrolment figures for private schools. Children from sealed public-sector schools are to be placed in nearby educational institutions so their studies are not interrupted, and heads of the schools concerned have been directed to make immediate arrangements.
Private school administrations have been instructed to rent suitable alternative buildings and continue classes there while arranging repairs. They may resume teaching in the original premises only after renovation and clearance by the district administration.
“We understand the importance of children’s education. We are taking urgent action to ensure that their education continues smoothly,” the deputy commissioner said. With Swabi schools sealed over building risk, the stated aim is temporary relocation and repair—not a lasting stop to schooling—while the remaining checks are completed.
