MQM-P opens street campaign in Karachi
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan has opened a major mobilisation for new administrative units in Pakistan, with party chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui announcing on Sunday a “historic rally” on Sharea Faisal on Nov 29. He spoke at a workers’ convention at KMC Park in PIB Colony, framing the gathering as part of a wider push for constitutional and administrative reforms.
A large crowd of activists, including women, attended. Party leaders credited former Karachi Tanzeemi Committee in-charge Hammad Siddiqui with organising the show from behind the scenes. Senior leader Mustafa Kamal and his close aides were not present.
Referendum call across four provinces
Dr Siddiqui, who is federal education minister, urged referendums under the Constitution to gauge public will on creating new administrative units in Sindh and the three other provinces. He argued that the current provincial structure had not delivered inclusive governance or an equitable share of resources.
“The era of feudal democracy has run its course. The establishment of new administrative units has become the country’s destiny,” he said, adding that the Nov 29 event would mark a major step in the campaign. He said political power and national resources should reach neighbourhoods and ordinary citizens instead of staying with influential families, and that a democracy was not representative if workers and ordinary people had no voice in parliament.
Asked about a proposed province, he recalled that migrants who came to Pakistan had given up property in India for the new country.
Party leaders on governance and Sindh’s identity
Senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar told the same meeting that the four-province arrangement had become a way to sustain a few political families. He pressed for participatory governance at the grassroots and said administrative restructuring was needed to meet urban challenges and public grievances.
He criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party for mismanaging Sindh over the past 18 years. He also said the proposed units would not weaken Sindh’s cultural identity, and that the party would keep embracing Sindhi traditions, including the cap and ajrak.
Former Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar urged workers to stay united under Dr Siddiqui’s leadership. Senior figures present included Syed Aminul Haque, Sindh Assembly Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi, coordination committee members, lawmakers and many workers from district East.
