International students, including those from Pakistan, have until 31 October 2026 to apply for the Honjo International Scholarship, which offers monthly financial support of up to ¥230,000 for master’s and doctoral study at Japanese graduate schools.
The award is run by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation for the 2027 cycle. Applications opened on 1 September 2026. Foundation details say roughly 10 students are expected to receive support. Eligible countries include Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, and several others. All academic disciplines are open.
What the stipend covers — and what it does not
Monthly payments depend on how long the degree is expected to take. Students on a master’s or doctoral programme lasting one to two years may receive ¥230,000 per month. A three-year programme attracts ¥210,000 per month. Programmes longer than three years attract ¥180,000 per month.
Support lasts for the minimum period needed to finish the degree. Tuition is not paid by the scholarship, so students must arrange fees separately with their university.
Who can apply and what is required
The scheme is for international students on, or planning, master’s or PhD programmes at Japanese graduate institutions, including the University of Tokyo. People already enrolled in Japan may apply. Those living outside Japan may apply only after they have acceptance from a Japanese graduate school.
Published details set a minimum GPA of 3.0. English benchmarks listed are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90. Applicants also need transcripts, degree certificates, an application essay, and one or two recommendation letters. Admission to a chosen university, such as the University of Tokyo, is a separate process and is not replaced by the scholarship.
How to apply before the deadline
Candidates apply directly through the foundation’s official website. University pre-selection is not required for the scholarship form itself. Documents and application information must be complete before the 31 October 2026 cut-off.
