Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed at least eight people, including a child, according to hospital officials, even as a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025 formally remains in place. Local authorities said three people died in Gaza City and five officers of the Hamas-run police were killed in Khan Younis.
What officials reported in Gaza City and Khan Younis
In Gaza City, hospital officials said a missile hit a group of civilians beside Cairo School in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood. Three people were killed, among them a child.
Further south, in Khan Younis, the Hamas-run ministry of interior said a drone attack struck officers in the Al-Mawasi area while they were on routine duty. Five police officers, aged between 23 and 53, were killed. The ministry named the dead and called the attack a "horrific massacre" by Israeli forces.
How Israel described the attacks
The Israeli military said it had carried out two attacks on what it described as military operatives. It has not yet offered evidence or further information. Israel says it is targeting Hamas, while civilians are often among those killed.
Ceasefire under strain and stalled diplomacy
The ceasefire came into force in October 2025, yet Israeli air strikes have continued almost every day. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says 1,580 people have been killed since the truce began — figures the United Nations treats as reliable.
A peace plan for Gaza brokered by the Trump administration has stalled. Under the ceasefire, thousands of Palestinians held by Israel were released in return for all 48 remaining hostages then held in Gaza, alongside an agreement to end the war. That war followed the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, when about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. Gaza’s health ministry puts the death toll since the war began at 74,594.
