The UK government has opened three new UK refugee sponsorship routes that will let community groups, universities and employers bring eligible refugees from seven host countries—including Pakistan—to Britain through legal channels rather than irregular journeys.
The schemes are Community Sponsorship, Refugee Study and Refugee Work. They are meant to offer safer alternatives to dangerous crossings, including small boats and attempts to enter Britain in lorries, while shifting more housing and early support costs onto sponsors.
Who can qualify from Pakistan
The routes will initially operate for refugees hosted in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Uganda and Kenya. They are not open to people living in their own country of nationality. Applicants must already have fled that country and be seeking protection in one of the seven listed states.
Eligibility also requires verification by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)—the UN refugee agency—as meeting the refugee definition, plus registration with the UNHCR or relevant authorities in one of those seven countries before 1 October 2026.
Under those rules, Afghans, Rohingya and other refugees from Myanmar living in Pakistan could potentially qualify. Pakistani nationals living in Pakistan, and internally displaced people, will not be eligible.
How the three routes work
Community groups in Britain may identify refugees they wish to support. At least five people can form a sponsorship group, which must work with a Home Office-approved lead sponsor. Sponsors may need between £9,000 and £15,000 to house a refugee family, cover financial help and meet essential needs. Groups may not charge refugees or profit from the scheme.
UK universities will be able to sponsor eligible refugees for higher education, working with specialist voluntary and community organisations to match students. British employers will likewise be able to offer jobs, again with help from those organisations to find candidates.
Applications from sponsors under Community Sponsorship and Refugee Study have opened. Applications for the Refugee Work route are expected in spring 2027. Ordinary members of the public cannot apply for a refugee sponsorship visa on their own; eligible people must be identified through approved sponsorship.
Checks, stay and settlement
Refugees accepted under the new UK refugee sponsorship arrangements will initially receive permission to stay for five years, with the right to work, study and access welfare benefits under the usual rules. The government intends a pathway to permanent settlement after five years, though the precise requirements for Indefinite Leave to Remain—long-term permission to stay—have not yet been fully set out.
All applicants will face Home Office identity, eligibility and security checks. A sponsorship offer does not automatically mean a visa will be granted. The government also aims to cut public spending on asylum accommodation, including hotels, by making sponsors arrange and fund housing and initial support. The model draws partly on Canada’s private refugee sponsorship approach.
