Islamabad — Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari, vice chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), has been elected a Fellow of the International Science Council (ISC). The ISC is a leading global organisation that promotes scientific research, cooperation among scientists, and the use of scientific knowledge in policy for human development.
The council announced his election on 16 October. Only two Pakistani scientists were selected as Fellows in that announcement: Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari and Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta.
Recognition for Pakistani science
Election as an ISC Fellow is treated as a significant honour in the global scientific community. It recognises contributions to the advancement of science and research. A press release issued in Islamabad called the election a proud moment for Pakistan and another milestone for FUUAST.
Career and national honours
Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari is an internationally recognised biological scientist. The press release said he has received a UNESCO award as well as the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz for his contributions to science. He currently leads FUUAST as vice chancellor.
The International Science Council fellowship places Pakistani researchers among peers worldwide chosen for sustained work in science. The council’s remit includes strengthening cross-border research links and bringing scientific evidence into decisions that shape development.
