Asif responds to Salik’s Punjab comments

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Wednesday that Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain’s remarks about corruption in Punjab were beyond his understanding. The comments came after Salik, a Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader, criticised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s provincial administration on a private television talk show on Monday.

In a post on X, Khawaja Asif wrote that he holds Salik in high regard and respects his elders. He said the claim about corruption in Punjab was beyond his limited political understanding, while calling corruption the biggest problem in society and a shared duty of federal and provincial political leaders to confront.

Federal ally and provincial row

Asif noted that Salik serves in both the federal and Punjab governments, which he said are led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He suggested that if the statement was meant to target Maryam Nawaz’s government and create political space for Salik in Punjab and at the centre, it would begin to make sense. He also praised Maryam’s work in cities and villages and said the service standards her government was setting would be a difficult challenge for opponents.

On Tuesday, Maryam Nawaz sent a Rs5 billion defamation notice to Salik, television host Naeem Ashraf Butt and the channel’s chairman. The notice said the remarks went beyond ordinary political criticism and amounted to serious imputations of widespread corruption. It demanded a retraction, an unconditional apology and clarification, correction or removal of the relevant interview portions, and Rs5 billion in damages.

Maryam said Salik’s anger was not about corruption or progress but about her recent change of the deputy commissioner of Gujrat, when he wanted an official of his choice. Salik replied that he stood by his interview answer and had spoken honestly.

Apology demand and accountability talk

Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb sought an apology, saying Salik was admitting he had no evidence for the allegations. She said dignity and justice required an apology for baseless claims rather than turning one deputy commissioner transfer into a personal ego fight. She urged him to do his ministerial job or step down instead of empty talk on corruption and good governance, and said false allegations against a chief minister who had served people through hard work and transparency for two and a half years would not be tolerated. Corruption, she said, exists as a disease in every society, but she argued Punjab was the only province where the chief minister herself was leading the drive against it.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari also rejected the remarks, advising Salik not to bite the hand that feeds him and alleging that his displeasure followed a rejected request for a deputy commissioner of his choice.

In the interview, Salik had praised former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi while saying he regularly heard corruption complaints about the present setup. He also questioned lavish government spending, especially official aircraft use, arguing that public representatives should keep the country’s economic difficulties in mind and show tangible public benefits from such trips. He called for stronger ministerial accountability at federal and provincial level.

The dispute sits against a split in the wider Chaudhry political family: Elahi and his son Moonis Elahi aligned with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf after the 2022 no-confidence vote that removed Imran Khan’s government, while the Shujaat family sided with the Sharifs. Salik is the younger son of PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain; his elder brother, Shafay Hussain, serves in Maryam’s Punjab cabinet.
