The Gilgit-Baltistan government has launched a scheme to provide certified wheat seeds to local farmers at a 50 per cent subsidy. The initiative is expected to cost Rs140 million and is aimed at supporting growers across the region.
What the scheme offers
Under the Chief Minister’s Vision for Agriculture, and on the special directives of Chief Minister Amjad Hussain, high-quality certified wheat seeds will be procured from Punjab and distributed among farmers in all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
GB Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Secretary Usman Ahmed said the government had taken another step towards making the region self-sufficient in agriculture and towards the welfare of local farmers. The focus, he indicated, is on quality seed at a reduced cost for growers who rely on wheat as a staple crop.
How farmers can apply
The agriculture department has launched an online portal so that farmers can obtain subsidised seeds through a convenient and transparent process. Mr Ahmed said those unable to use the portal can register by contacting the office of the deputy director of agriculture or the agriculture officer in their respective districts.
Officials present the portal and district-level registration as parallel routes: one digital, one in person. The subsidy itself is fixed at half the cost of the certified seed under the announced design of the programme.
